Free Online PDF Editor: Complete Guide in Simple Words
MyPDF Guru’s free PDF Editor lets you change existing text on a page, add new text, highlight or mark lines, draw shapes, cover content with whiteout, insert or remove images, and download a new PDF. This guide explains every tool in simple words so you know what the editor can and cannot do.
What this PDF editor actually does
Many “PDF editors” only place a white box over old text and type on top. This tool is different for Edit Text: it reads the real text layer from your PDF, removes the old glyphs when you change a line, and writes the new text back into the file. That helps keep fonts, colors, and many table layouts closer to the original document.
The editor has six tools in one place: Edit Text, Add Text, Annotate, Shapes, Whiteout, and Images. You can use them together on the same PDF, then download one updated file.
Upload a PDF
Drag a PDF into the upload area or click the box to choose a file from your device. The first page opens in the viewer first so you can start work while later pages finish loading. Only PDF files are accepted. Password-protected PDFs are not supported here — unlock them first with the PDF Password Remover if you own the file and know the password.
The largest file size this editor accepts is 40 MB. Bigger files will fail when the editor tries to read or save them. For a very large scan, compress the PDF first, then open it here.
How the editor reads your PDF
After upload, the page shows a preview with PDF.js. At the same time, the editor sends your PDF to the MyPDF Guru editor engine so it can extract exact text positions, colors, fonts, links, and image boxes. Page 1 is prepared first. The rest of the document continues in the background.
That extract step is what makes click-to-edit accurate. It is also why this tool is not fully “offline only” like some of our other PDF tools. Your file is used to build the editable view and again when you download the finished PDF. We do not keep your document as a saved account archive after the job.
Edit Text: change words in place
With Edit Text active, click any selectable line on the page. An inline editor opens on that same line. Surrounding text stays as it is, so you can fix spelling, rewrite a sentence, or update a number or date without rebuilding the whole page.
When you download, the old glyphs in that area are removed and your new text is written back. That is real text replacement, not a sticker sitting on top of the old words.
Font, size, color, bold, and italic
When text is selected, a floating toolbar appears above it. You can change:
- Bold and Italic (if that font family supports the style)
- Font family from the editor picker (common faces such as Helvetica, Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Courier New, and more)
- Font size from 6 to 120 using + / − or by typing a value
- Text color
- Move, Duplicate, or Delete the block
Wherever possible, the download engine tries to keep the look of the original PDF fonts. If a font face does not offer Bold or Italic, those buttons stay unavailable for that family so the final file does not look broken.
Add Text: place new words on the page
Switch to Add Text, then click an empty place on the page and type. New text is placed at that point. You can restyle, move, duplicate, or delete it afterward. This is useful for titles, labels, dates, short notes, or any line that was missing from the original file.
If you click near existing selectable text, the editor can copy nearby size, weight, italic, and color as a starting style so the new line looks closer to the rest of the page. You can still change every style control after the text is placed.
Annotate: highlight, underline, strike out, and freehand
Open Annotate from the tools bar. You can mark text or draw freehand:
- Highlight — soft color over selected text
- Underline — a line under selected text
- Strike out — a line through selected text
- Freehand highlight — brush-style mark for larger areas
- Freehand draw — thinner pen strokes for circles, arrows, or notes
Pick a color (including a custom color), then drag across the text or draw on the page. Annotations do not rewrite the underlying words. After placing a mark, you can change its color, hide it from the final PDF, or delete it. Marks are baked into the downloaded file as drawn graphics.
Shapes: rectangles, ovals, lines, arrows — and more
The Shapes tool draws classic shapes plus newer marks added in this beta:
- Ellipse / oval
- Rectangle
- Triangle (new)
- Diamond (new)
- Star (new)
- Line
- Arrow
- Check mark (new)
- Cross / X (new)
Choose a shape, then click and drag. After placing it, select the shape again to move it, resize it, change stroke width and color, set a fill color for closed shapes (rectangle, oval, triangle, diamond, star), duplicate it, or delete it. Check and cross marks are stroke-only. Shapes are drawn on top of the page content in the final PDF.
Whiteout: cover content on the page
Whiteout covers content with an opaque rectangle. Drag over text or graphics you want to hide, then optionally use Add Text to write the correct content on top.
Important: whiteout is a visual cover. It paints over the area in the downloaded PDF, but it is not the same as permanently deleting the old text layer. If you need to remove and replace real selectable text, use Edit Text (or delete a text block) instead of whiteout alone.
After you place a whiteout, you can change fill color, border width, border color, duplicate it, or delete it. Whiteouts are applied before Add Text in the final file so new text can sit cleanly on top of the cover.
Images: insert, move, resize, rotate, or remove
Open Images to:
- Insert a picture from your device (PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF)
- Create a simple stamp with subject, author, and date
- Select an existing image on the page to move, resize, rotate, duplicate, or remove it
- Repeat an inserted image on all pages when you need the same mark everywhere
Background watermark images are treated carefully so they do not block text clicks in Edit Text mode. Stay in Edit Text to click the words. Switch to Images when you need to select the image itself. To apply a watermark across many pages with more control, use the PDF Watermark Adder.
Very thin lines and full-page scan backgrounds are skipped in the “existing images” list so the editor does not treat an entire scanned page as a movable photo.
Undo, Redo, Clear PDF, and change count
The top bar shows the file name and how many changes are waiting. Use Undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z) and Redo (Ctrl+Y or Cmd+Shift+Z) for recent steps. Clear PDF leaves the current file and returns you to the upload screen after confirmation.
The download button stays disabled until there is at least one counted change, so you do not download an unchanged copy by mistake.
Page navigation for multi-page PDFs
Use Prev, Next, or the page number field under the viewer. Edit the pages you need, then move on. Large files open page one quickly while later pages continue to prepare in the background.
Download Edited PDF
Click Download Edited PDF when you are ready. The editor sends your original PDF and your changes to the apply engine, which rebuilds a new file with text edits, annotations, shapes, whiteouts, and image changes. The download is saved as a new file such as report-edited.pdf. Your original upload is not overwritten on your device.

Privacy: what happens to your file
This editor needs the PDF on the server for reading text positions and for building the final download. That is different from tools that run only in the browser with WebAssembly. Your file is processed for the edit job and is not kept as a long-term stored document in a user account. For very sensitive files, use a trusted network and an updated browser, and delete local copies you no longer need.
Mobile and tablet
The PDF Editor works on phones and tablets as well as desktop browsers. Tap text to edit, use the same tool buttons for Add Text, Annotate, Shapes, Whiteout, and Images, then download when finished. Large pages may feel slower on a phone because preview and editing still need device memory.
Scanned (image-only) PDFs
Pages that are photos of paper with no selectable text layer cannot be rewritten with Edit Text. There is no OCR step in this tool. On those pages you can still use Whiteout, Add Text, Shapes, Annotate, and Images. For best text editing results, use a PDF that already has selectable text.
