PDF to Handwritten Notes: Complete Feature Guide

This free online tool turns any PDF into handwritten-style notes. No signup, no upload to a server—everything runs in your browser. Below is a simple, detailed explanation of every feature so you know exactly what you can do.

1. Upload your PDF (drag & drop or click)

You can add your PDF in two ways: drag the file onto the upload area, or click the area to open your computer’s file picker. Only PDF files are accepted. You will see a short progress message while the file is being read. Once it’s loaded, you’ll see how many pages the PDF has and you can clear and choose another file anytime with the “Clear” button.

2. Works with both text PDFs and scanned or photo PDFs

If your PDF has selectable text (like a document you typed or exported), we read that text directly. If your PDF is made of images—for example, a scanned book or a photo of a textbook page converted to PDF—we use OCR (optical character recognition) inside your browser to “read” the text from the image. So you can convert PDF to handwritten notes whether the PDF came from a digital document or from a scan or photo.

3. Handwriting style: 11 fonts to choose from

You can pick how your handwritten notes look. We offer 11 handwriting-style fonts: Caveat, Kalam, Patrick Hand, Dancing Script, Shadows Into Light, Satisfy, Pacifico, Indie Flower, Architects Daughter, Gloria Hallelujah, and Homemade Apple. Each gives a different “handwritten” feel—some neat, some more casual—so you can match the style to your taste.

4. Font size and line spacing

You control how big the writing appears and how much space there is between lines. Font size can be set between 14 and 32 pixels using a slider. Line spacing can be set between 1 and 2.5 (for example, 1.4 means lines are a bit more than one line height apart). Bigger font and more spacing make notes easier to read; smaller font fits more on each page.

5. Ink color: pick any color or use presets

Your “ink” color is fully customizable. You can choose any color with the color picker, or use one of the six preset colors: black, dark blue, navy, dark brown, charcoal gray, and blue-black. The color you choose is shown next to the picker (for example, #1a1a1a) so you can keep the look consistent.

6. Paper layout: plain, ruled, grid, dotted, or your own image

You decide what the “paper” looks like. Blank paper is plain white. Ruled paper has horizontal lines like a notebook, plus a red vertical margin line on the left. Grid paper has a full grid of lines. Dotted paper has a pattern of dots. Custom background lets you upload your own image (for example, a photo of your favorite notepad); that image is used as the background for every page. So you can convert PDF to handwriting on the type of paper you like.

7. Page size: A4 or Letter

You can create your handwritten notes in either A4 size (common in many countries) or Letter size (common in the US). Choose the one that matches how you usually print or use your notes.

8. Margins you can adjust

Margin is the empty space around the text on the page. You can set it between 24 and 120 pixels. Larger margins give more white space; smaller margins let you fit more text per page.

9. Choose which pages to convert (page range)

You don’t have to convert the whole PDF. In the page range field you can type things like “1-5” (pages 1 to 5), “10” (only page 10), or “1-3, 7, 9” (pages 1, 2, 3, 7, and 9). If you leave the field empty, all pages are converted. This helps when you only need certain pages turned into handwritten notes.

10. Page limit (up to 10 pages per conversion)

Each time you click “Create Handwritten Notes,” the tool can process up to 10 pages. If your PDF has more than 10 pages, you can either type a page range (for example, 1-10 for the first 10 pages) and then run the tool again for the next range (11-20), or split your PDF into smaller files and convert each part. This keeps the tool fast and reliable for everyone.

11. Smart detection: “Already handwritten” PDFs

If your PDF is already handwritten (for example, scanned handwritten notes or a filled form), the tool can detect that. In that case it will show you a message and not run the conversion, because the goal is to turn typed or printed text into handwriting—not to change handwriting into handwriting. You can still use your original PDF as it is.

12. Headings, bullets, and tables kept in place

The tool tries to keep your document’s structure. Bigger or bold text may be treated as headings and shown slightly larger in your handwritten notes. Bullet points and numbered lists (like “• item” or “1. item”) are kept. If the PDF has tables (columns and rows), the tool detects them and draws the text in a grid so tables don’t get mixed up with normal paragraphs. So your converted notes stay organized like the original.

13. Live preview before you create the PDF

Before you click “Create Handwritten Notes,” you can see a live preview of how your notes will look. The preview shows sample text in your chosen handwriting font, ink color, font size, line spacing, and paper style (including ruled, grid, dotted, or custom background). When you change any setting, the preview updates so you can adjust until you’re happy, then create the real PDF.

14. Everything runs in your browser (privacy and no signup)

Loading the PDF, reading the text (or running OCR on scanned pages), drawing the handwritten pages, and creating the final PDF all happen inside your browser on your device. Your file is not sent to our servers. You don’t need to create an account or log in. That means your documents stay private and you can use the tool right away.

15. One-click create and download

When you’re ready, click “Create Handwritten Notes.” You’ll see a short progress message (for example, “Extracting text,” “Creating handwritten page…”). When it’s done, the tool generates one PDF file with all your handwritten pages and starts the download. The file is usually named “handwritten-notes.pdf.” You can open it in any PDF reader or print it.

In short: upload a PDF, pick your handwriting style and paper, optionally choose a page range, and get a new PDF that looks like handwritten notes—all online, for free, and without sending your file to a server. If you have more questions, check the FAQ below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. Text PDFs are read directly. Scanned or image-based pages use Tesseract.js OCR in your browser—everything stays on your device. For best results use clear, printed text; handwriting may not extract well.

I converted a photo of a textbook to PDF; why isn’t all the text extracted?

Photo-based PDFs have no text layer, so we use OCR. For better extraction: (1) Use a clear, well-lit photo with minimal shadow or glare. (2) When turning images into PDF, keep resolution high—at least ~1500px on the longer side. (3) Crop to the page only so the image is mostly text. (4) Use one photo per page. OCR may take a bit longer on these PDFs but should capture more text.

Are my files sent to a server?

No. PDF loading, text extraction, OCR, and PDF generation all run in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

What paper layouts are available?

Blank paper, ruled (lined), grid, dotted, and custom background (upload your own image). A4 or Letter size with adjustable margins.

Can I select specific pages?

Yes. Use the page range field (e.g. 1-5, 10, 15-20). Leave it empty to convert all pages.

Is there a page limit?

Yes. This tool supports up to 10 pages per conversion. For longer documents, split your PDF and convert in batches, or select a page range (e.g. 1-10) for the first part.

Why does it say my PDF is already handwritten?

We detect scanned handwritten notes or hand-filled forms. The tool is meant to turn typed or printed text into handwriting. If your PDF is already handwritten, no conversion is needed—you can use it as is.

Can I change the handwriting style and ink color?

Yes. Choose from several handwriting-style fonts (e.g. Caveat, Kalam, Patrick Hand) and pick an ink color (black, blue, brown, gray, etc.). A live preview shows how your notes will look before you create the PDF.

Does it work offline?

After the page loads, the main conversion runs in your browser. You need internet once to load the page and fonts; after that, processing is local. For full offline use, load the tool once while online, then you can use it offline for that session if your browser caches the scripts and fonts.
